In just a few days we can start celebrating Women in Construction week. March 6-12 marks the National Association of Women in Construction’s observance of WIC Week to highlight women as a “visible component of the construction industry.” Local chapters host networking events, raise awareness of opportunities available for women in the industry, and give back to their communities throughout the week.
In 1953, sixteen women working in the construction industry founded Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. Since females made up only a small fraction of the industry, they wanted to create a network of support. The group’s mission was successful and it gained its national charter in 1955, becoming the National Association of Women in Construction. Today, about 5,500 women in approximately 170 chapters across the United States are members.
Members come from general contractors, subcontractors, construction management firms, law firms, insurance companies, and more. They hold roles such as project managers, owners, superintendents, administrative assistants, lawyers, construction managers, office managers, accounts, and field/office engineers.
