The Safety Director is responsible for all environmental, health and safety matters and will provide guidance and oversight of the company’s safety program. This position leads the occupational health and safety efforts within the company through effective communication and strategic vision. Individuals will oversee the company’s EH&S training program and ensuring employees have a safe work environment.

This position analyzes work safety data and determines how to control, eliminate, and prevent injury or disease caused by physical, chemical or ergonomic factors. They will conduct company workplace inspections and work closely with management leaders to ensure compliance with state and federal laws or company policies.  The Safety Director will advise management on the cost and effectiveness of safety and health programs designed to limit risks to workers and the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety (EH&S), Safety Management, Construction, or related field OR significant experience in place of degree
  • 8 years of experience in safety management with at least 5 of those years in a supervisory and leadership role overseeing a highly structured safety program.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) preferred.
  • Thorough technical knowledge of construction related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices.
  • Prefer working knowledge of electrical construction and standard for electrical safety in the workplace (NFPA 70E).
  • Require OSHA 30.
  • Prefer OSHA 500.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Prefer First Aid/CPR certified.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Daily Tri-State travel to projects.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead development Nickle’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, procedures, to build a safety culture dedicated to behaviors, which lead to best-in-class results.
  • Identify hazardous conditions and practices. Implement corrective measures to address the issues and conditions.
  • Develop methods to predict hazards from experience, historical data, workplace analysis, and other information sources.
  • Evaluate the probability and severity of incidents or exposure to hazardous environments.
  • Identify controls to reduce or eliminate hazards and recommend new programs or practices when required.
  • Assist Project Managers and Foremen with required construction safety plans; participate in meetings to compile necessary data; review and approve safety plans for subcontractors prior to submission to the project site.
  • Participate in project pre-planning meetings to ensure safety is part of work plans. Ensure Project Managers and Foremen address specific safety hazards prior to starting work activities by reviewing the Safety Plans or Job Safety Analysis.
  • Participate in pre-job Safety Planning meeting with Project Manager and Superintendent prior to beginning work.
  • Visit and inspect each job site a minimum of every 2 weeks.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate the program’s progress, making additional suggestions as necessary.
  • Audit job sites and warehouse’s locations for hazardous materials to ensure proper storage.
  • If an injury or illness occurs, investigate unsafe working conditions, study possible causes, and recommend corrective action.
  • Develop and maintain systems to measure safety performance against established standards.
  • Monitor performance (in relevant areas) according to agreed standards and take necessary action to communicate/advise/assist according to performance levels.
  • Provide proactive leadership and ownership of building best in class safety culture by anticipating problems and providing solutions; sharing knowledge with and providing training to all levels of staff; through interaction with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors; and creating an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment to promote employee engagement.
  • Communicate with customers and suppliers where necessary (where impacting/affected by safety/quality issues)
  • Serve as company representative to customers, OSHA, and any other external safety related agency.
  • Establish working relationships with other Safety Directors within the construction industry through community involvement, membership of industry committees, and related organizations
  • Chair the Nickle Electrical Safety Committee meetings
  • Promote safety awareness within the company through the implementation of suggestion programs, safety incentives, and other programs recommended by committee.
  • Attend required company meetings
  • Lead Safety Specialist using performance management and development process to include goal setting, feedback and performance development training that provides an overall contract and framwork to encourage employee contribution.
